Somebody once told me that sailing consists of “long periods of boredom followed by brief moments of sheer terror.”  After sailing over 14,000nm between New England and the Caribbean aboard a 57’ Beneteau sailboat named “Splendido”, I could not possibly agree more.

By all accounts, crew love does not have to be quick, sloppy shags on the beach or under a bridge after drinking enough rhum to float the Maltese Falcon.  Nor must it be the fore mentioned tearful long distance trauma. None-the-less, most readers have participated at least one of these rituals, if not both, on numerous occasions during their yachting career.

So there I was treading water nose to nose with our 50 something male charter guest who was spitting blood, hyperventilating, and on the verge of panic. This is where all your years of Red Cross lifeguard training, and STCW refreshers kick in.

I did my best to use the season's leftovers, making it a challenge to come up with appetizing dishes without buying new ingredients. I had learned through experience that nothing would survive the intense heat of a closed up storage locker; cans had been known to explode, bugs would invade sealed dry goods no matter how many zip-locks you put them in.

I swiped irritably at the perspiration forming on my brow and continued scrubbing viciously at the manky dirt stains on the little boat's interior. Despite my aggressive scrubbing, the mould and muck remained stubbornly within the corners and crevices - my muscles had been abused!
