On Tuesday, March 3rd the first Budget Marine Match Racing Cup will take place on the Simpson Bay Lagoon . This event is part of the Heineken Regatta but is a totally different form of sailing competition. Match Racing relates to Fleet Racing (normal races) like boxing relates to marathon running. The races are very short involve penalties and dramatic action and are very spectator friendly, the most famous match racing event is the Americas Cup. The winner gets a $5,000 cash prize and the second place $3,000 and third place $1,000.
The majority of sailors will be professionals and all experienced in the various match racing tours. The favorite is likely to be Peter Holmberg the Virgin Islander and Olympic medalist who was a skipper on the winning Allinghi team in the last Americas Cup. This is the first time a match racing event has been connected to a major Caribbean Regatta and is typical of the Heineken Regattas drive to continue innovating.
The event will take place throughout the day but the finals are likely to be around 4 pm . The racing will be off the Juliana airport runway inside the lagoon and spectators are invited to come with dinghies to watch. Some spectator boat accommodation will be available and ferries will go from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club.
