Megayacht Marina proposal for San Juan
by Carol BareutherFacilities and amenities for megayachts are on the cusp of grander development in Puerto Rico. According to a government report titled, ‘Economic Development & Government Transformation Plan for Puerto Rico’, there is a proposal to shift freight traffic from the Port of San Juan to the Port of Ponce in order to make room for a $1.5 billion waterfront improvement project in San Juan that will include a $20 million megayacht marina. An article published in August 2007 in the Puerto Rican newspaper, El Nueva Dia, cites Fernando Bonilla, executive director of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority as saying the “Port of San Juan could be ready to handle mega-yachts by the end of 2008.”
