Superyacht Transatlantic Challenge 2008: Antigua-Azores-Vigo
by Carol BareutherThe first Superyacht Cup Transatlantic Challenge is planned for April 2008 starting in Antigua April 8 and 9, arriving in the Azores April 17, and finishing in Vigo, Spain April 25. The course will take yachts on the traditional track across the Atlantic, 2,160 nautical miles to the Azores and another 922 nm to Vigo. There will a performance sailing class and a ‘rally class’ which will enable yachts to keep up an average minimum speed by motoring if necessary. The two classes will start separately in Antigua with the aim of all yachts finishing in a 24 - 48 hour period in the Azores.
Horta Marina will host the fleet during a short Azores stopover. Yachts will then start in pursuit race format on the final leg to Vigo. There, the fleet will be moored in Marina Davila in the centre of Vigo for a black tie evening April 26 before yachts head off to the Mediterranean, northern Europe and beyond for the summer. www.thesuperyachtcup.com
