Berthing in Malta is proving popular with superyacht owners, with a number of yachts measuring more than 30 metres in length arriving at Camper & Nicholsons Grand Harbour Marina this month. Eleven superyachts are currently berthed at the marina – including the 100m (LOA) Christina O and the 56m (LOA) Al Shoua. According to Ben Stuart, General Manager for Grand Harbour Marina, the arrival of superyachts is having a positive impact on the local region. “As the marina gets busier during the autumn and winter months, the local economy benefits – generating prosperity for the island as a whole”, he said. Grand Harbour Marina offers world-class facilities to all sizes of yacht up to 100 metres in overall length and is strategically located between the western and eastern Mediterranean. The harbour has a minimum depth of five metres and all repair and refit facilities are readily available. As a wintering alternative, Grand Harbour Marina is becoming a popular destination for winterization, as the marina offers the finest facilities for superyachts in commission or in refit. The nearby Malta Shipyard Services handle refit and repairs for steel, GRP and wood – with engineering, electrical and hydraulic specialists on hand. There is even a travel lift and covered hard-standing for boats up to 140m in length. The Maltese climate has hot summers with cooling sea breezes and a mild winter climate – providing the perfect weather pattern for year round cruising. This luxury marina has a yacht club, health and sports clubs and spas nearby. The international airport just 15 minutes away provides facilities for private jets and has easy access to most European cities. Well-charted local islands and bays give opportunities to cruise a short distance to visit one of the exquisite beaches in the area and enjoy the varied coastline. Watersports include scuba diving, fishing, windsurfing and waterskiing, with local dive schools offering tuition and historic and interesting dive sites to visit. Malta is well known for its diverse culture taken from the many invaders over the centuries and now enjoys a cosmopolitan outlook with a diverse range of tastes. There are many 5-star hotels, health spas, restaurants and bars providing an eclectic mix of Asian, Middle Eastern, African and European.
