Where are you from and how did you get started in the yacht business?
I am British, from the south of England, was born in Romsey, Hampshire and moved to Brighton 8 years ago. I started in the yachting industry 4 years ago, after doing a ski season in Andorra. After that I headed to the sunny Cote d'Azur for the summer and within 3 days was on a yacht sailing the Meditaranian Sea!!
What is your current post and how long have you been there? Currently I'm chief stew on a 60m busy charter boat, Amnesia. I joined 2 months ago and am loving it.
Tell us a little about the boat. It’s a Benetti; we have 15 crew, including the captain. The boat is currently in Antigua, sailing the Caribbean for the winter. In April we head back to the Med for another busy summer season. We have a great crew, a fabulous itinerary, and the boat is pretty nice too. She is a very contemporary style yacht, with a minimal and beautiful interior, very modern and chic.
Is there such thing as a typical day? Not at all!! I take everyday as it comes... Sometimes everything runs like clock-work and you sleep at night thinking things can't get much better. Then there are always those days where something throws a spanner in the works. That's what I love about this job! I worked in a mundane boring office for 10 years, with the same routine, view and moaning clients. At least here everything is changing all of the time and thankfully most people don't moan. Why should they when you are sailing around beautiful Caribbean waters?!
What is your favorite port of call? So far, I have to say that I loved India, oh and Thailand! Both are very special places, with equally special people! Two years ago I spent the entire winter based out of Mumbai in India. I know they are having problems now with terrorists etc, but then it was the most friendly, safe and welcoming place I have been to in my life. Plus, I met my boyfriend there, totally by chance. He was working on another yacht, so it’s a very special place for me :-)
What makes everything rosy in your world? My 'office window’ changes pretty much everyday. I get to see some great places by just looking out of the window. Most of all it’s rare being able to share this with a special someone. There are not many jobs in this world where you are able to work with partners. You get to work, live and spend time together in fabulous places all around the world. Perhaps the best part is that you get paid for it too.
What makes your life a living hell? Demanding guests and bad provisioning. Most guests I have dealt with in my entire time have been great, pleasant and a joy. However there are always exceptions to the rule. A living hell are people that are rude, act like you are ignorant or don't have any respect at all. When you have to find so many special requests on the provisioning side of things and people don't want alternatives it can be hard, especially in the Caribbean. It gets better each year, especially with some great provisioning companies now in operation. Sometimes when you are in remote places and just can't get hold of anything you need, it can be very frustrating.
Any regrets or great moments you would like to share? I don't have any regrets at all. Sometimes I wish that I had started in this industry when I was younger, but otherwise I'm a very happy girl! Great moments... Just the fact that you get to me some lovely people doing this job. I have been very lucky with most crews that I have worked with and that's the best part - getting to know so many great faces from all around the world.
Any advice for newbies? Work hard, don't take the piss and realize that this is still a job, not just a life style....
Any parting shots (words of wisdom)? Hmmmm.... I'm not really one for advice, but definitely try something at least once and learn by your mistakes.
